Music videos, videos that go with a song, have been a part of music marketing for decades. Thanks to various programs and even whole networks on satellite TV, music videos can be enjoyed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The idea of music videos started in the 1800s, but they didn’t start evolving into what we know today until the 1960s, and really became mainstream in the 1980s. Illustrated song, which began in the late 1800s, involved still pictures matched up with music. In the 1960s more artists began to film footage to play along with their songs, such as The Beatles and The Animals. It was not until the 1980s that music videos became mainstream, thanks to MTV, a network that focused on music. Artists began to use music videos as another creative tool in their marketing plan, providing visuals along with audio for their fans. Music videos have grown into part of the culture and allow artists and directors to get very creative with visuals, storytelling, special effects, dancing, and more. Today it is rare if a song is not accompanied by a music video. There are several music channels on satellite TV that are dedicated to playing music videos.
CMT: The Country Music Channel began in 1983 with the goal of playing country music videos around the clock. It is now the number one country music channel, and viewers can enjoy concerts, music videos, and programs related to both music and country. The American Country Music Awards are also aired on CMT.
MTV: MTV was launched in 1981 with the goal of playing music videos around the clock. Over the years, their purpose has changed. Today they target young adults with reality shows and pop culture news. They only air music videos from 3 AM to 9 AM on their program AMTV. Their sister channels, such as MTV Hits and MTV Jams, play music videos almost all day and night long.
VH1: VH1 was launched in 1985 by MTV with the goal of targeting an older demographic. Over the years it has changed and now play music more similar to that of MTV. The main VH1 channel airs reality shows and other programs in addition to music video programs. Shows like VH1 Top 20, You Oughta Know, Unplugged, and The Leak are all dedicated to live music and music videos.
